What are the Functions of FSSAI ?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The main function of this organisation is to formulate food safety standards. And quality standards relating to foods and food additives etc. to ensure that the consumers get safe and healthy food.

 

The FSSAI has three main functions:

 

1)            Regulation of import and export of food items

 

2)            Regulation of labelling and packaging of foods

 

3)            Organisation of periodic inspection/sampling from all pre-packaged products stored in any market place

FSSAI and its Role in Safety Regarding Food Supplies

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established by an act of the Parliament in 2009. It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The objective of FSSAI is to promote safe and nutritious food for all Indians.

 

FSSAI has been given a large mandate to regulate, monitor, inspect and certify all food products sold in India. It also has been given powers to levy fines on erring manufacturers and retailers.

 

The FSSAI has jurisdiction over all food products sold in India, including processed foods, spices and beverages that are imported from other countries as well as manufactured locally. It also monitors export-import operations at airports so that no food items are allowed to be exported without proper testing by FSSAI.

 

The role played by FSSAI in ensuring safety regarding food supplies is enormous because it has many regulatory bodies working hand in glove with each other at different levels throughout the country.

FSSAI and Importance for Consumers

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body established by the Indian Government for the purpose of ensuring food safety and standards in India. The authority has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that all food products sold in India are safe, healthy and nutritious.

 

The FSSAI Act, 2006 specifies that FSSAI shall be responsible for promoting good manufacturing practices, monitoring food safety and ensuring that all food products sold in India comply with prescribed standards. The authority also issues licenses to persons manufacturing and selling foods which are considered fit for human consumption or require special storage conditions.

 

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has been given jurisdiction over all matters regarding food control as well as issuing licenses to persons who produce, process or sell food items. This includes licensing restaurants, hotels and other eateries serving hot beverages such as tea/coffee/hot chocolate etc., as well as bars serving alcoholic drinks such as beer/liquor etc., that are on sale within premises owned by them.
